We’re looking forward to bringing even more of the Walkabout community together this year.” said WEF Runabout Coordinator, Angel Eisermann.

Walkabout Program Fundraiser - Runabout!

The Walkabout Program has been improving the lives of high school students in the Putnam/Westchester area for thirty-six years.  The experience has a positive and long-lasting impact on its graduates, providing them with the skill, direction and confidence to become successful adults and contributors to the community. As a result of budget cuts, the Walkabout Program is in danger of closing.

“Walkabout has a rich history of bringing out the best in its students. If we allow a struggling economy and school district budget cuts to bring this award-winning program to an end, it will have long-lasting effects – not only on those students who desperately depend on it – but also on the future of our community as a whole.” said WEF Chairman and Walkabout Alumni, Ben Wild.

The Walkabout Program provides an essential bridge for students who struggle to find their way in regular high school, enabling them to reach their full potential. For example, 29% of Walkabout graduates go on to pursue a master’s degree. A impressive statistic considering that the US Census Bureau states that only 8% of the general US population posses a master’s degree. 1

“RUNABOUT will serve as an opportunity for Walkabout alumni and supporters to unite and give back to the program, which is in desperate need this year. We’re asking everyone who has been touched by the Walkabout Program to show up in support of the program. Whether by running in the 5K, walking in the 2K, making a financial contribution, Walkabout needs your help.” said Alison Green, WEF Board Member and RUNABOUT Organizer.

The Walkabout Education Foundation, comprised of a volunteer board has worked furiously to raise awareness for the program and simultaneously fundraise. WEF Board Member Alison Green has spearheaded WEF’s effort to host a 5K run and picnic in FDR park just miles from the Walkabout campus in Yorktown Heights, N.Y. The Walkabout Education Foundation has organized several events to make an afternoon people will remember and raise money for the much needed program.

Walkabout Fights For Its Existence In Putnam, Westchester School Districts!

This dramatic WEF blog post “headline” is taken from the article (of the same name) on the Hudson Valley Reporter online regional news site, which was posted yesterday, after the Walkabout Education Foundation/Walkabout Program press conference was held in Mt. Kisco, NY…

Walkabout Education Foundation (WEF) fights for the Walkabout Program

Of course Walkabout and Walkabouters (educators/staff, alumni, parents, friends and supporters) are fighting for our existence, our survival – it’s what Walkabouters do!  Over the 36-year (so far) history of Walkabout, the program and mission have positively impacted the lives of 1400 alumni, and countless others….

The good – no GREAT – news is that we are WINNING the fight!

Winning?  We have not reached our first, short-term goal yet, but we have raised awareness, and significant funds already, and the goal is in sight!  We were granted a time extension, based on our progress and results (in a very short time) to date.  We have a plan, with more alumni, parents, friends and supporters signing on daily.

Walkabout will not only survive, it will thrive, and grow!

Walkabout Education Foundation Will Host a Press Conference

Thursday, June 27th at NY Grand Prix in Mt. Kisco

WEF chairman, alumni and supporters will share details about

the Walkabout Program’s Future and how the WEF can help

June 26, 2013, Katonah, NY – the Walkabout Education Foundation (WEF), a non-profit with the mission of advocating and expanding challenge-oriented experiential learning programs through funding and awareness will host a press conference on Thursday, June 27th at Grand Prix N.Y. in Mt. Kisco. WEF Chairman Ben Wild will make a short presentation about the organization, its goals, the impact it has had on the Walkabout community to date, and the danger of not funding the Walkabout Program in the future. Wild’s presentation will be followed by several Walkabout Alumni, local educators and supporters sharing stories about how the Walkabout program affected their lives, and will finish with a short Q&A session. Members of the media and community are invited.

Event: Walkabout Education Foundation press conference

Date: Thursday, June 27, 2013

Time: 10:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.

Location: Grand Prix New York 333 North Bedford Rd. Mt. Kisco, NY 10549

Speakers: Walkabout Education Chairman Ben Wild, Local Educators, Alumni

WEF’s overall goal is to give back to the Walkabout community that has changed so many lives over its 36-year history. The WEF, founded just a few months ago by mostly Walkbout Program alumni, had the sole, initial goal of keeping the Walkabout Program open and thriving for years to come. That mission has grown into a supportive community dedicated to a much larger mission of continuing both the existing program, and supporting similar programs, which change young people’s lives through challenge-oriented experiential learning. This press conference will provide an update of WEF’s fundraising efforts to date, outline the plan of attack to save the existing Walkabout Program, solve the ongoing funding problem, and identify other similar programs that need support.

Victory for Walkabout!

Walkabout Update = Great Progress, but not at the Summit Yet!

In the few weeks since Walkabout Education Foundation (“WEF”) moved from an idea, to action, we’ve made great progress in the fight to keeping Walkabout alive!

We can and will make it to the summit, with your help…

We are almost at the top, with your help! Walkabout Education Foundation

One of our primary goals was to raise awareness, in an effort to get more students signed up for next year. We’re happy to say that there are now 2 more students signed up which reduces our fundraising needs by $50,000! Recent meetings with BOCES have been very, very positive and it looks like they are close to making the announcement as to whether or not the program will get the green light for the 2013-2014 school year.  All signs are pointing to yes which is great but, it is certain that they will be counting on a large check from the Walkabout Education Foundation to make it happen.

We have run the numbers on how much it will take to meet all of the WEF goals and the grand total is $250k.  With the support of alumni, we’re confident we can do it.  Between what has been pledged so far and what we feel we can get from other foundations we’re  in talks with, we’re about halfway there already.  We would be very grateful if you could help “pay it forward” by doing a few things:

  1. Make a donation here: http://walkabout.org/donate/
  2. If you haven’t already, please sign up at http://walkabout.org/signup/ – and tell all the Walkabouters you know to do the same!
  3. Let us know of any foundations, charities or grants that you think may be able to give to our cause by emailing donate@walkabout.org with potential donors

Make sure to join the Walkabout Alumni group on Facebook and LIKE the Walkabout Education Foundation page on Facebook, to stay up to date with the latest news…

And, if you want to know what’s going on with current and FUTURE students, please LIKE the Walkabout Program page on Facebook.

Thank you!
